Signs Your Vagus Nerve is Underregulated (And How Dr. Nicole Fixes It)

You finish a grueling 10-hour workday, close your laptop, and climb into bed. You are physically exhausted, yet your mind is racing. Your heart pounds as if you are still standing in front of the board presenting a high-stakes case. You are tired, but your body refuses to let you sleep.

As a high-achieving professional woman of color, you might blame your packed calendar, demanding legal clients, or hospital unit pressures for not being able to wind down. You try to rationalize your fatigue, telling yourself you just need more willpower.

But this chronic state of being "wired but tired" isn't a mental flaw. It is a biological signal that your vagus nerve—the essential command center for physical and emotional calm—is severely underregulated from prolonged corporate stress.

The Nervous System Brake: Understanding Vagal Tone

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in your body. It acts as a direct bidirectional superhighway between your brainstem and your internal organs, including your heart, lungs, and digestive tract.

In clinical psychology, we call this nerve's health and responsiveness vagal tone. When your vagal tone is high, your body acts like a vehicle with a responsive braking system. You can face a stressful corporate meeting, spike your energy to handle it, and then instantly apply the biological "brake" to return to deep, restorative rest.

However, when you navigate chronic institutional glass-ceiling demands, that braking system wears out. Your vagus nerve loses its flexibility, leaving you trapped in an underregulated loop.

This autonomic dysfunction manifests through clear physical warning signs:

  • The Baseline Shift: Your resting heart rate remains elevated, meaning your body never registers true safety.

  • The Digestive Shutdown: Because the vagus nerve controls your gut, underregulation frequently causes chronic bloating, acid reflux, or a perpetually knotted stomach.

  • The Emotional Exhaustion: You find yourself easily startled, highly irritable with loved ones, or completely detached and emotionally numb.

To fix an underregulated vagus nerve, you must move beyond analytical talk therapy alone. You have to communicate safety directly to the body using somatic, bottom-up neurological pathways.

Dr. Nicole’s Daily Reset Tools

You can begin toning and regulating your vagus nerve directly from your office chair during a 2-minute break between meetings:

The Somatic Tool (The Body)

Sit up straight and let your hands rest heavily on your lap. Gently tilt your head to the right side, bringing your right ear toward your right shoulder without lifting the shoulder. Keeping your head tilted, shift only your eyes to look up at the ceiling to the left. Hold this position for 30 to 60 seconds. Breathe naturally until you experience a biological release—a deep sigh, an involuntary swallow, or a yawn. Bring your head back to center and repeat on the left side. This target movement physically stimulates the vagal pathway behind your ear.

The Cognitive Tool (The Mind)

Catch the perfectionistic, frantic corporate thought: "I must stay connected and alert at all times to protect my position."Intentionally replace it with this clinical validation: "My safety does not depend on my constant hyper-vigilance. I am allowed to step down from high-alert mode and let my body rest."
