Reclaiming "Asili": Returning to Your Original Nature and Core Strength

In Swahili, the word Asili carries profound meaning. It translates to origin, source, nature, or essence, representing the blueprint of who you are before the world tells you who you should be.

As a high-achieving woman of color navigating demanding corporate, legal, medical, or academic environments, you may easily lose touch with your Asili. To survive and thrive in elite spaces, you may feel compelled to wear layers of psychological armor. You might find yourself code-switching, hyper-functioning, and overriding your physical exhaustion to meet impossible standards of endless productivity.

However, hiding your authentic self to conform to rigid corporate standards comes at a high energetic cost. True wellness isn't about learning new coping skills; it is about reclaiming your Asili—stripping away survival armor to reconnect with your original nature, somatic intuition, and inherent core strength.

The Neurobiology of Environmental Self-Estrangement

In clinical psychology, we understand that repeatedly altering your natural behavior to fit unsupportive or draining environments puts your brain under chronic stress. This constant self-monitoring depletes your metabolic energy and disconnects you from your body's survival signals.

When you lose touch with your original baseline, your autonomic nervous system may respond through three specific blocks:

- Identity-Based Hyper-Vigilance: Continuously filtering your true voice and emotions keeps your amygdala active, making you see your natural essence as a liability.

- Somatic Dissociation: Pushing past your physical limits can cause your brain to sever its conscious connection to your organs and muscles, leaving you numb to your own needs.

- Power Collapse: When your natural boundaries are consistently suppressed, your system may enter a mild freeze state, resembling depression or severe brain fog.

Reclaiming your Asili involves helping your nervous system recognize that your original, uncompromised self is a place of absolute safety and significant professional power.

Dr. Nicole’s Daily Reset Tools

You can start reconnecting with your original core strength right at your workstation today. Try these two tools during your next break:

The Somatic Tool (The Body)

Sit comfortably and uncross your legs. Place both hands flat over your lower belly, just below your navel. Close your eyes and soften your jaw. Inhale deeply through your nose, intentionally directing the air down so that your hands rise significantly. Exhale slowly through your nose, allowing your belly to fall completely flat. Repeat for five deep cycles. This diaphragmatic movement activates your core vagal network, pulling your system out of emergency mode and centering you in your physical core.

The Cognitive Tool (The Mind)

Recognize the exhausting institutional thought: "I must twist myself into a perfect, hyper-sanitized shape to preserve my authority and position in this space." Intentionally replace it with this affirmation: "My original nature is my ultimate source of wisdom, longevity, and sustainable power. I choose to anchor myself in my own Asili today."
