Living with Plants for a Happier Mindful Life

“I grow plants for many reasons: to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty, or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grow.” -David Hobson

Plants in the house decorate the environment and bring various benefits from both a physical and emotional point of view. Choose the most suitable plants based on your available space and the time you can dedicate to them. Below are seven benefits of living with plants.

1. They purify the air

In 1989, NASA scientists researched the best plants to keep at home to purify the environment. It is essential to consider this because we are continually exposed to toxins and toxic agents. Given the ease of keeping plants at home and the great variety that exists, the recommended plants for purifying the air are:

Bamboo palm: taking care of it is easy and reduces formaldehyde (a chemical used as a bactericide and preservative).

The palm of the Areca species: ideal for small rooms and offices, it is a slow-growing plant that does not need much water and whose leaves are excellent for purifying the air.

Ficus is among the best plants for eliminating environmental chemicals; it is a versatile plant in appearance due to its shape, stem, and size.

2. They generate happiness

Many people agree that plants influence mood thanks to their multiple qualities.

Suppose you are a sensitive person and believe in the positive vibrations that an object or a living being can transmit, put plants in the house. The ones that may be right for you are:

Violet: ideal if there is a climate of conflict and disagreement at home because it helps maintain peace and reduce stress.

Waxy Ivy: said to bring good luck to the family.

Anthurium: known as "male happiness, "this plant is indicated to increase fertility in men and sexual libido.

3. They are good for the mind

Taking care of a plant or various plants awakens the mind, inspires love and affection, and reduces stress and anxiety.

If possible, devote yourself to gardening; it is an activity that allows you to burn calories, stimulate sensory levels by coming into contact with the earth, and activate creativity.

4. They attenuate noises

In addition to purifying the air, plants can be excellent acoustic insulators.

For this reason, there are many buildings covered with vegetation. In addition to beautifying the facade, they reduce traffic noise.

5. They have a relaxing effect

Take advantage of mother nature's goodness and grow plants at home that will be of great use in times of anxiety.

St. John's or Hypericum plant: since it contains hypericin (antibiotic and inhibitor), this plant is ideal for combating depression, anxiety, insomnia, and the emotional symptoms of menopause.

Passionflower: this plant has calming effects, promotes relaxation, and reduces anxiety symptoms.

Valerian: reduces stress, helps to induce sleep, stabilizes the heart rhythm, and relieves the symptoms of anxiety or sadness.

6. Promote concentration

Just as plants help reduce anxiety and stress, some varieties help improve concentration.

In the form of tea, aromatherapy, or hot bath, these plants are great for stimulating the natural performance of the brain.

Rosemary: has several beneficial properties for health, including that improving memory.

Lemon balm: stimulates mental concentration and helps reduce anxiety and insomnia.

Hibiscus or Altea: it is a calming plant par excellence. Being rich in choline helps preserve a good memory.

7. Source of positive energy

According to some currents of thought, such as feng shui, some plants in the house attract positive vibes. Get these plants to give your home a positive atmosphere:

Lavender: ideal for insomnia people, lavender promotes energy balance and a feeling of well-being.

Fern: offers a feeling of protection and increases self-esteem. Grow one at home if you have just ended a love affair.

Chrysanthemum:generates a feeling of well-being.

As you can see, the benefits of plants in the home are manifold, regardless of personal beliefs or principles. Each plant has its properties, decorative (when it comes to beautifying the home), curative (to improve physical and emotional health), and therapeutic (to attract positive energy into the house).

“Plants give us oxygen for the lungs and for the soul.”
